Why do we need green logistics? With the pressing issue of environmental damage we are faced with today and more widespread awareness, businesses are forced to go green more than ever before. For certain industries, especially ones related to transportation, the pressure is on them to have greener operations by curbing greenhouse gas emissions more than any other industries.
But in fact, the benefits of green logistics are not only limited to gaining a social license to operate and approval from consumers. Green logistics fuels sustainable growth as it allows businesses to minimize operating costs through minimizing transportation, waste and error, while maximizing efficiency. It is a win-win situation for all involved.
How is Green Logistics operated?
- The first thing is for operators to understand environmentally-friendly logistics management principles and mechanisms such as Green Products, the 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) principle, as well as rules, regulations and standards governing green practices such as ISO 14001.
- Secondly, operators need to analyze every step of the supply chain to see what can be improved upon, using the above principles and mechanisms as part of the analytical process.
- Thirdly, the implementation of environmentally-friendly initiatives such as the development of green infrastructure or an eco drive practice.
The challenge is to find the balance between maximizing efficiency and green operations and the sweet spot that fulfills both aspects.
