1. Electric Trucks

In the future, Tesla won’t be the only key player in the market. Nikola, Einride, Daimler and Volkswagen are also advancing technologies to make trucks safer and more secure on the road with significant enhancement in fuel saving. Starting with lane changing and braking technology that refines self-driving trucks of tomorrow, it also comes with a big benefactor of significantly less maintenance requirement as a result of less deterioration from freight operation thus a more cost-effective overall package, altogether. Doing so saves energy, manpower, maintenance costs and above all, pollution. According to a survey by Peloton, the companies that adopt such a system can reduce fuel consumption in the front vehicle by 4.5% and 10% in the last.

3. Internet of Things (IoT)

Known to many as the the interconnection of objects via the internet that constantly send and receive data that can be computed in real time, the IoT, according to the founding concept, is the optimization and convergence of three core infrastructures: telecommunications, energy, and logistics, including manufacturing. Seemingly a concept out of a sci-fi comic book, the IoT is very much active today affecting every aspect of our lives already without us even noticing.

Several companies are implementing IoT infrastructures. Kuehne + Nagel, for example, are applying sensors and a cloud computing to keep track of real-time shipment status at each location where the product is processed. Moisture content from cargo pallets, including the impact on the pallets, for instance, can also trigger an alert to management. IoT will play a key role in, not merely monitoring transport status in real time, but also in terms of data-driven management and decision making, as well.

4. Big Data

Big data is an expansion on legacy data-mining concepts where databases were either disconnected, had incompatible data structures, simply too large to be processed by relational database engines, or were too small to uncover meaningful underlying patterns from content data, with streamlined procedures in real time.

Big data will play a significant role in Predictive Analysis for freight load and asset utilization calculation-optimization, both of which are crucial to transportation operations. However, first things first is information accuracy, or in other words, data and therefore system integrity. The point is that AI leads to data accuracy and data accuracy leads to accurate analysis.
